Supporting LGBTQ+ Young People
By Victoria, Sep 4 2021 07:51AM
Mermaids offers excellent online training around supporting LGBTQ+ young people. The training is open for parents, carers and those working with young people. Mermaids mission is to embrace, empower and educate.
Jo Thompson of Mermaids outlines the “burden, worry and strain” on LGBTQ+ young people and how coming out can be immensely stressful. Stonewall’s School Report 2017, outlined that 45% of young transgender people attempt suicide, 84% self-harmed and 1 in 10 had received death threats. These figures are shocking.
The UK school curriculum now includes LGBTQ+ into the curriculum including inclusion lessons. However, if you are requiring support, either for yourself or as a means to support someone else, you can call Mermaids; they have a helpline open Monday to Friday from 9:00am - 9:00pm: 0808 801 0400.
You may wish to talk things through with me; I work inclusively and support young people in regards to their gender and identity.
